WINTER 2023

From the Earth: REVVING UP FOR THE YEAR

I researched over 15 seed companies, gave a presentation to the Virginia Master Gardeners to give them insights of the different companies, then selected and purchased seeds. With my journal, I track the rate, speed and success of germinating for each of the seeds.

With seeds on their way, I am ready to begin the garden process - and that means the stinky trip to Infinity Farm and their Manure Mountain. We get a variety of product, from camel, to goat, to zebra, to lama, chicken, etc. The one thing in common is the distinctive aroma of freshly scooped poo.

Alas, this is the price you pay for a natural garden, free of chemistry. Luckily, the odor dissipates in a day or two, leaving behind organic microbes and food for the season. the cardboard is organic and composts while killing the grass and weeds beneath

For my 2023 garden, I am doubling the size so that I can grow more tomatoes and peppers, as well as corn and beans. The cardboard helps to kill the grass and composts into earth - it helps to retain moisture as well.

Seeds started in January have emerged into seedlings and the second group of seeds started February 19, at the new moon (these include my nightshade plants - tomatoes and peppers).
